Quirk Books has come out with an alternative: How Not To Write: An Office Primer for the Grammatically Perplexed. It is one of those books with a small trim size and you will only have 159 pages to read. Author Terence Denman has given reader 10 sets of tips and myths. One combination is "Chopping Off Your Unwanted Auxiliaries" and "You Can't Have a Comma Before And".

I post this here, because the longer I am in business the more I realize how important good writing skills are. When working as a research associate at university I recognized for the first time how little experience most students have with writing. Mostly, their final thesis is the first time where they have to thoroughly think through a topic, organize their thoughts and put them onto paper.

Writing skills aren´t anything that you learn easily. As for me, I always had a hard time writing up stuff, especially when it were more relationship based items as letters or articles in the graduation book. Today I am more comfortable with writing than I was before, and I think it is because I was forced to write so often. Well, I even started a blog by now :-) Still, I consider myself being far far away from being a writing pro.

It´s an experience thing, so I hope over time my competencies in this field will become better. For everybody out there I can just say: exercise, read a book about good writing, exercise more, get feedback, exercise, and have fun with it.
