Procrastination

As you might know, I am not a native speaker. So, indeed, I had to look up what procrastination is the first time I read it.

I better shouldn´t have, because now I know, what one of my major personal shortcomings is: I am heading for mastery at procrastination. It is almost a game by now, at least a definite pattern: A task comes up - I delay it - I delay it further - finally I work on it (often too late) - I am angry on myself because I did it so late. Qhy? Because the drawbacks of procrastination are so manyfold:

  • Often it costs money - I have to cover latepay penalties, interests, loose on discounts etc.
  • More than once I had to work a night through to be anble to meet a deadline - with proper planning and without procrastination this wouldn´t have been necessary.
  • I am angry on myself because I didn´t meet up to my expectations or go unprepared into exams, meetings etc
  • I miss out on opportunities because I did not think well through them (or, well I thought so and realized too late that some more research would have been beneficial)
  • etc.
So, for the remainder of 2005 I add one more resolution to my list (besides learning a language, loosing weight down to 80 KG, learning 10-finger-typing): stop on procrastination....or at least try to not do it to such an extent anymore.
